I agree that policy positions don't matter much. But I think strong universal programs matter a lot. It has been so long since we have had any policy implementation that seemed genuinely positive for regular people -- that people could recognize as the government helping them.

They matter a lot *once they are implemented.* I do not think that e.g. calling for Medicare for All would, in itself, have much of an impact on a candidate's election chances. I think that *delivering* Medicare for All would have a very big impact on their reelection chances.

It's great to debate policy, but this often devolves into overly complex argument and, when it happens, implementation. The academic/pundit class needs to realize that they can often do more by simplifying existing law/government than by heaping on more. Universalism is good.
