This is my favorite book of all time. I like both movie versions, despite their flaws. The 1946 version adheres more closely to the book, which in many ways is inherently uncinematic.

I haven't read this but I've read a few others by WSM. He explores his characters really well and you feel them as real people. I thought this adaptation never really got to the bottom of Larry though. I do have the book and have been meaning to read it for ages. Must bump it up
The book purposely keeps Larry out of the main action for most of it; we only really get glimpses of him via Maugham, which the 1946 movie replicates. The 1984 version doesn't have SM in it all, making Larry the main character. An understandable choice by the filmmakers, but IMO not as effective.
