I know this wasn't really the case, but growing up my family (and society?) treated racism as a solved problem because anyone who behaved racistly would get yelled at and shamed.

It has the downside of making it harder to understand systemic issues, but it was better than whatever the fuck is going on now where so called "independent" and ostensibly leftist media calls for understanding of monstrous bigots.
