However, there shouldn't be that much bruising unless the person wielding the needle is inexperienced or if he's on blood thinners.

Blood thinners...no amount of pressure will stop the bruising. Eventually, the veins will wall themselves off after too much use. You can take blood out, but can't infuse through them, so they move to larger veins in the hands, side of wrist...ankles but too much swelling there...or a perm port.

Intravenous drug applications will cause this too. I used to get bruises like this during chemo treatments.

He may have removed the pressure band aid too soon. Some people get impatient and end up with that kind of bruising.
