I had been blaming this on Big Media choices. But maybe also just that the media environment is algorithmd so completely that it's flat and the monoculture is too dead to raise salience of these things ...?

You're absolutely right. The reason these smaller groups are working is because they're relying on spreading the word through their personal communities rather than over an algorithm. It's a return to the old ways in a sense.
