Right around the same time Amtrak was developing these seats about a decade ago. The airline industry moved past this phase, Amtrak hasn’t.

Is this maintenance-driven thing (fewer moving parts to fix) that became a procurement fad, or OEMs pushing a component & procurement not pushing back? Both? Seems to be a total lack of customer input.
