!!!!!
When I did this a couple years back I used the Packages feature to be able to create a trackable progress list and not rescan cards. My biggest recommendation after that is having sections for logged and unlogged cards.
Not at the digitized stage yet, but you inspired me to spend the day updating how I organize my cards.
I have over 70K cards alphabetized in in 7 4by3 (~800count) card box houses. digitizing them seems like a literal nightmare!
I've done the same, but using ManaBox and right now just the Rare/Mythics with exceptions for high priced cards, SLs, etc, and any boxed product like precon Commander decks that can be uploaded easily. Just cracked 10K cards, best of luck!
I did that for my collection over the past year and discovered a lot of duplicates in my collection that I just don't need. Might finally be able to get a bunch of OG duals
It’s so worth the time investment. I only did rares and eternal playables. Someday I’ll go through the boxes for all the commons and uncommons.
Are you hand-jamming it or using some sort of scanner-to-list-to-Moxfield upload thing?
I have been having good luck with the Mana Box scanning, export, and uploads like oyhers have mentioned in the comments. Also got one of those plastic stands to make the scanning faster. Wishing you much quick success.
I recently did similar. Delver lens + echotmg. I believe Delver allows you export a format Moxfield takes in. Breaking into time or physical stacks was helpful for me. Ended up with 1400 over $2 tradebales + 10k in every else.
That's an incredible pace though; is that starting from 0? Or from decks you already had loaded?
I had a bunch of staples registered from decks I had made. The tricky thing now is not accidentally duplicating cards I've already added.
That is definitely one of the things that's kept me from doing it
Working on cataloging my binders into manabox have 1.25 out of 5 done so far. Making progress condensing copies spread across several binders. Been looking at my boxes and having trouble imagining myself logging all those at some point.
Are you typing these in by hand? Or scanning?
Typing 🥲
Using mana box is great. If you happen to have a lot of a particular set laying around you can have it just searching through a set and it goes really fast. It's not great at getting foil vs non foil, but you can update that as you go. Then you add that file to moxfield.
Also it doesn't like duplicates right after another, so a messy collection is actually fine. There is a specific file type for uploading to moxfield. It's a great little app. I use it regularly.
@goberthicks.bsky.social literally scanned and sent me an entire edh deck in like less than 5 minutes from ask to answer using delver lens. You could scan your collection on stream and i (and others) would watch in a heartbeat and keep you company during the monotony if you're worried about that!
I worry a big part of this stream would just be the top of my head as I'm looking down constantly
Point the camera at the cards dingus ❤️
Which part of the card is the dingus? 😳
😂 I mean, fair
I’m sure the input is fun and challenging, but it’s the upkeep that would kill me 💀 I can’t even be bothered to sort all of the new cards by set and number, let alone enter them online 🥲
I organize by colour, then by type, but don't go as deep as alphabetical. For all the decks I brew for filming keeping my collection somewhat organized is a necessity
I guess if you have a digital record, you don’t need to sort deeper than color/type 🤔 It’s at least tempting to digitally enter trade binders… You may be onto something, but it scares me, haha
I did that for mine with Deliver Lens recently. It took ages and I'm sure my collection is much smaller
I did an inventory of my entire collection of 47k cards on Deckbox starting in 2017. It took a year to complete, as I also alphabetized at the same time, and only did a little bit at once. I’ve since kept it updated, and also added it to Moxfield. Time well spent. No regrets.
Holy moly, well done
We use Deckbox for collection tracking. I think @jenfilthymtgcasual.bsky.social spent the better part of two years getting our collection uploaded. I’ve tinkered with trying to upload the entire thing to Moxfield but haven’t got it to work yet. It’s been a while though.
Yeah, I can get all the cards in via CSV, it doesn’t like my tokens or art cards though. At least that gives me another copy of the main collection outside of Deckbox
Yeah I’ve tried that the file was just tooo large last time. Haven’t taken the time to break it down into smaller batches. Maybe someday 😂
I finally figured out how to export just a set at a time for EOE, so that helps.
TWO YEARS?? 😭
We’ve been at this a while bud. You’ll get there 😂
This makes sense as to why Moxfield would have trouble with the import. It took a few minutes to do mine which is 1/3 of that in quantity.
I use mtgstocks - i didn't get very far when i was motivated
Ahhhhhhhhh 😂
Yager, you would have a heart attack at how many cards I have unsorted and randomly dispersed in unlabeled boxes
Shivam, we still have that pitch for the reality show where Wheeler moves into your shed and sorts your cards. :D
I'm fairly certain I would, yes 😂 This whole thing started because I bought an extra copy of Lotus Petal because I didn't know I already had one. Never again
I could build an entire pod worth of decks from cards i accidentally bought twice 😅
:looks around awkwardly:
Right?!? 😂
Don't worry Serge, Doni just bought like 80,000 cards from someone and I would imagine that doesn't come close to their total collection 😅
That's, like, an entire stores worth of cards??
Oh my friend… most stores have four or five times this 😂
I mean Doni... We live in Canada, we have small(er) stores ;)
I did it years ago on deckbox when my collection was a reasonable size, have added to it since and am now unsure of accuracy. Much the same as you the idea of checking/restarting is daunting
I used ManaBox to scan all the cards in my collection using my phone and it ended up taking me about a week. I haven't bought boosters since like 2020 but I still scanned almost 13,000 cards.
^ I use ManaBox to scan, and then export that as a CSV and import it into Moxfield. Saves a lot of time.
Yeah holy shit, the scan feature on Manabox is a godsend. I undertook my own cataloguing project a couple of years back, and it probably only took me a couple of weeks tops
I got 2. A Swamp and a beta Force of Nature.
Cataloging my collection took about a month, working on it after work. You get faster with time. Throe on a podcast, and you'll make good progress.
Artifacts done Red done 2,102/???
I love that that's how you started your list. Artifacts then Red, I would love to see your sorting after this is done, it seems like it would be a treat!
I have a bunch of my staples already registered, spending a tonne of time having to double check each card to see if it's been added yet or not. It was a lot of progress getting both these boxes done even if the number didn't go up that much.
If we don't have a thing where I get a notification when Serge's Charging Badger count goes up, I don't even know why we bother having a civilization in the first place.
...well it's nice to learn that I actually have a hoarding problem when the MtG folks I follow and respect have... drastically smaller collections.
my collection is VERY meticulously curated :P i do not own anything without purpose
Legitimately, honestly: goals. I have been wanting to shift from a collection of cards to a collection of decks and this is a good motivation.
Now that I've solidly moved into doing more Commander stuff, my collection is starting to balloon. Previously only playing canlander meant I could run very lean, but now I have to look at every Kindred card and think to myself "why yes, I think I can see Turbo Raccoon in my future" 🥲
Mine took weeks and weeks but i really enjoyed doing it
Lands done 2185/??
The premier lands catalog of the format
Black done 2428/??
Let’s start taking bets on which color/color combo has the highest count.
Gold done 2755/??
Can I hire you after you are done
I've been told by many people that my methods are both slow and bad, but yeah we can talk
i just want to hang out so those are plusses
if it works for you what else matters?
Blue done 2999/?? Getting so close to being done with the whole thing 🙃
Anybody with a box of six thousand random Magic cards and Serge's mailing address has the opportunity to do the funniest thing right now.
Plz no 🥲 My collection is so clean
What’s been your process? Manually inputting into Moxfield?
Exactly this I have a good chunk of my collection registered already, so I'm also auditing as I go, making sure I've got the correct version of each card
Makes sense! My drawers of cards are staring at me begging to be catalogued…
As someone who's been through this before, the payoff is worth it. Hang in there!
Now you can never sell or trade a card again. You not only have to physically part with the card, you have to remove it from your moxfield collection. Just not worth it the effort and double emotional damage!
Gold seems to have the single biggest chunk of new cards added (so far) This means a good chunk of these cards have never seen play since I started using Moxfield. Wild.
Are you organizing as you go? If so, that seems like a Herculean task.
My cards are almost all sorted already, a necessity with all the different deck construction I do. The new job is trying to add them all online so I know what I actually have.
Honestly, that's the reason I stopped playing MTG back in college. I had neither the time nor the desire to spend ages sorting and stuff (keep in mind, that was about 20 years ago). Something like Moxfield would've been amazing.
I started this exact same project with my meager collection a while back. Few months and 3 different android scanning apps later I am still going...
I thought about trying this, and then realized I had like 12,000 cards. And then realized even if I managed to catalogue all those, I’d never manage to keep up with new cards…
I am trying to foil my peasent cube and I am always buying a second foil, even though I have it all recorded on Cubecobra, because I can't be bothered to take out my phone to check if I already have it in foil
I still use good old Excel and import csv to Delver Lens and then other sites as needed. Zero apps/sites have the depth, breadth, and up to date cardlists my brain demands. 153k cards in 4x3x800 card hotels by set and collector number. Upkeep is a few days each set. I envy the focused collections. 😎
It’s very rewarding once you get it done. We had 5 5000 count boxes when I started our inventory. It’s grown since then 😂
It's so freeing once it's done. Now I can search my inventory, see if I have any and even where they are.
But it’s gonna feel soooooo good when you’re done.
I'm waiting for that sorting cataloging machine to become affordable then maybe I'll think about it lol
I still got to get to the sorting phase, first. Even just putting them in boxes of Commons/uncommons in this box, rares/mythics in that box, split by color, is taking a while lol
