The crowded thing is true if you go where the crowds are, but there are so many places, all within easy walking distance, with no crowds at all.

This is true! And they aren't 'less good' than the crowded places. Also, on my honeymoon, 3 nights in a Canareggio Palazzo cost less than one night in the St Pancras hotel.
I was supposed to be going to Venice for a week at the start of October, but I've got a shoulder injury, so I'm doing it vicariously, thank you. I always stay in Dorsoduro somewhere: convenient for the centre but not overrun and there's a good supermarket.
Hope you heal up soon and can get on your travels again.
I've been recalled by the GP I saw in the first place and I'm hoping this is routine . . . I'm not sure what's going on. It has improved but the scary thing is I don't know what caused it this time (i fell and damaged a ligament 7-8 years ago). Apparently shoulder joint replacement ops are a thing.
Lost again, eh?
