Why is everyone clamoring about "verification" here when we already have @atproto? We already have a way to verify that, for example, you're a reporter for a newspaper.

Sure, someone could make a *similar* URL and put up a convincing website, but most of the people talking about getting verified aren't even using @atproto! Why not?
even as a big established org, you can not own all your-domain.tlds + variations and common typos. and take media outlets as a complicated example: contributors are most often not employed, but freelancing for them, sometimes only infrequently. with verification they can keep their own domain/brand.
some examples from a quick search through my domain registrar of choice.
as a former media person: the org you are working for does not have the capacity and/or will to constantly manage and monitor their dns for external people. but pressing the "yeah, that's the account+personal domain of this person we know irl" button once is totally doable.
verification and the limitations on which verifiers developers choose to show in their appview, should not be seen as a sign of privilege or royalty, but more in the sense of a key signing party for groups with a high risk of impersonation.
