Substack is a haven for independent journalists. If you see an article you really want to read but can’t afford to subscribe, contact the author. You can also do some research to see if anyone else has reported on the subject. But PLEASE don’t expect them to give away their labor for free.
When I post an article, it’s because I think it’s worth reading. So please don’t just reply with a comment “paywalled” like it’s an accusation. It’s rude. If you can’t afford it or you are looking for a gift link, please just ask. If you decide it’s not worth paying for, please scroll by.
