Substack is a haven for independent journalists. If you see an article you really want to read but can’t afford to subscribe, contact the author. You can also do some research to see if anyone else has reported on the subject. But PLEASE don’t expect them to give away their labor for free.
Gift articles for subscribers are limited. I got really frustrated today when someone tagged my post as clickbait because the article was by an independent journalist who put his work behind a paywall. Journalists have to eat too. It’s unfair to expect them to work for free.
I also look for deals like Boston Globe ($1 for six months) And I share gift articles whenever possible. But invariably I get complaints that something is paywalled. I want people to realize we need to support independent journalism or we will lose it.
I wrote a post earlier that probably sounded insensitive. In fact, I’m sure it did. I deleted it and now I’m going to rephrase it. I canceled my NYTimes & WaPo subscriptions and decided to subscribe to independent journalism as much as I can. Some paid. Some free.
