A coworker loaned me his Volt for a week when my truck was in the shop. The one downside I could see was that you had to have a high-amperage circuit for most effective charging: a standard 120VAC 15A circuit wasn't enough to give it a full charge overnight (≈10 hours.)

this doesn’t seem like it should be a function of the Volt having a gas-powered charger on board though? was under the impression that having a higher amperage circuit installed was pretty common among owners of electric cars, but there is prolly also an expectation that typical use won’t drain to 0

It's not an issue due to the generator itself, just that the battery charger will adjust its draw depending on the available power when plugged in. A higher-amp and/or higher voltage circuit will let it charge faster.
