Looking thru the other end of the glass: The entirety of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) is almost exactly the land mass of my state, Oregon. The population of the state of Oregon is about the same as the city of Birmingham in England.

(I'm old enough to remember when Diesel passenger cars were one step from illegal in California - you could own one, but you got to pay some hefty additional fees.)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
Not necessarily not interested, but #2 Diesel fuel is generally more expensive now than 87 octane gasoline. Diesel is more efficient, but the emissions are nastier. Things like Selective Catalytic Reduction systems help, but they're hard to fit in anything but a large pickup at least.

About a year after the Baja was cancelled, I was getting at least one person a week asking "What is that? Do you like it? Where can I get one?" I'm actually surprised Subaru hasn't given it another try. (The Hyundai Santa Cruz I replaced it with attracts the same sort of attention!)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
Some cars come out a little ahead of their time. The first brand-new car I bought (at age 35) was an '05 Subaru Baja Turbo pickup. Subaru had expected to sell 20K-25K of them per year; they ultimately only sold about 40K in 5 years and called it quits. The 2006 model was just to use up parts. (1/2)

My state has actually banned "pretextual" police stops for things like expired tags, burnt-out taillights, tinted windows, etc. (Now, if they're nicking you for something else, those can go on the ticket - but if it's the sole pretext for the stop, it'll get tossed.)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not an issue due to the generator itself, just that the battery charger will adjust its draw depending on the available power when plugged in. A higher-amp and/or higher voltage circuit will let it charge faster.
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
Now that's a surprise - for some reason, all of the previous chocolate sodas that I know of, meaning Canfield's - which is apparently now a Walmart brand - and Cragmont (Safeway's old house brand, which did a chocolate mint version), were always diet.
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
A coworker loaned me his Volt for a week when my truck was in the shop. The one downside I could see was that you had to have a high-amperage circuit for most effective charging: a standard 120VAC 15A circuit wasn't enough to give it a full charge overnight (≈10 hours.)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
Volkswagen owns the old International Harvester "Scout" brand, and is planning to bring out both a truck and a SUV under the name this year, both with a similar design as the Volt's - no engine, just a generator, a battery bank, and drives for all 4 wheels.

So long as a President can pardon them, it's a moot point. As we've now seen in real time. The US is not a party to the International Criminal Court - if we were, Putin would have been arrested the second both of his feet were on Alaska's tarmac. They have no jurisdiction here, so what's left?

Schrader voted with the Republicans most of the time. And we D's in his district voted him out in the primary in favor of Jamie, by double digits. The DNC didn't consider that, nor did they consider that _every seat matters _. They wouldn't fund her just because she'd primaried a D incumbent. (2/)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
Until you get your heads out of your butts about primarying useless Democrats, and start supporting the primary winner - you're not fit for purpose. In 2022, Jamie McLeod-Skinner booted Pfizer millionaire and pretend veterinarian/rancher Kurt Schrader - who always ran as a Democrat. (1/)

Thor's stuff was high-quality enough that they weren't selling very many replacement parts - and tried to write the supply down as a "market forces" loss. That didn't fly. (Ironic that they were building stuff that didn't break down very often, but got dinged for keeping spares just in case.)
Don Hilliard (@electromotive645.bsky.social) reply parent
The case was _Thor Power Tool Company v. Commissioner_. It's ironic these days to the point of hilarity: Thor made and stocked common replacement parts for all its tools. They capitalized the parts as part of their overall worth. (1/2)

The short version: there was a Supreme Court decision in 1979 (dealing with a case that started in 1964) that shelf stock is a taxable asset even if it's not selling. There are exceptions for things like what you describe, where the stock is "substandard" - ie used or "new old stock".

Unfortunately, there are tax reasons for not having the parts warehoused all over. I've worked as a marine engineer for two decades, and have run into this repeatedly. (And it's only gotten worse as 75% of the machinery I work with is made overseas. Not to mention the new tariffs.)
