I'd be inclined to agree but I don't really like calling into question whether people really are appalled by the ongoing genocide. I think most of them truly do care about that. I think most of them also are clout addicts. I think both can be true.

What they care about is Russian foreign policy circa around 1980. If you support it you're good (Palestine, Iran, Gaddafi, Assad), if you oppose it you're evil

I'm extremely sceptical that people that can laugh and joke about one atrocity can then show disgust talking about another. We see this with racists all the time, with "us" and "them" discrepancies of outrage, but that's not compassion or humanitarianism, it's weaponisation and bigotry.

In this case, I think the weaponisation is about online political clout more than anything else, but it's not rooted in compassion. Compassion doesn't laugh at war atrocities. That's basic stuff.
