At the best, I would observe that such wounded souls have to be careful for the rest of their lives. They can't let the old profligate spirits that falsely promised a twisted kind of "comfort" walk away with them.

I'm so sorry that you got what appears to me to be a rude surprise from those who you ought to have been able to trust the most. If it's any consolation, I know it happens in families. It happened in mine, due to the spiritual effects of selfish people who refused to embrace God in truth.
