You haven’t been paying attention over the last 40 years then. Democrats have never pulled back republican excesses even when given the power and mandate to do so, they fail. They fail so often that one cannot be blamed for believing that Dems agree with what the republicans are doing.

The Democratic Party neutered the ACA. It never effectively controlled costs, there are still 25 million people without health insurance. The ACA is a great example of Democratic ineptitude that brought us here. It put a new coat of paint on a condemned house and democrats thought their job was done
