Sorry to ask the stupid question, but I was reading the alt text on the second image. Why is cross hatching bad, and what's the preferable way to draw a Black kid in this kind of black and white medium? Is full coloured with a grey tone preferable?

Half tone would've probably been much better, at this point peanuts had already introduced Franklin and probably managed to print him in b&w without looking like al jolson. I have a feeling even the name is a response to that.
