Why anyone would put a smoke detector so far out of reach is beyond me RS

If you have another one, like us, they are connected so you only need to switch off the lower one.

Got rid of one in the middle of a 10ft ceiling, put two on walls within reach standing on a chair. Also got one with an override in the kitchen. Less annoyance all around.

Right? You’ll probably die of a broken neck instead of a fire!

It’s everywhere. I have one in my house that is near the peak of the living room ceiling- a little over 16ft.

Pro tip: I file off the plastic latches, so you can slide the alarm off its base without first inserting a screwdriver in a tiny slot. It makes those 3AM battery changes much easier.

We had one 10 ft above a staircase, and the only way to reach it was to put a ladder on the stairs. So you won't fry in a fire, but you're 200x more likely to break -- all your parts.

Eric. No, not that one. Or that one. @ericb013.bsky.social

I was renting a townhouse with one on a vaulted ceiling. I had to ask a neighbor who worked second shift if I could borrow a ladder. It started going off after 11 pm, and he got home a bit after that.

And no one can make a battery that does not die in the middle of the night so something is chirping loudly but you can’t tell if it’s upstairs or downstairs or which device!
