I’ll take a band that is silly because of how seriously they take themselves over a band who leans into self awareness and parody any day. If a band feels like they don’t respect or like the genre they’re playing, why should I like or respect them?

I wrote an essay on this topic. Conclusio: Black Metal is completely serious about itself whatever it may cost. That's why edgelords aren't Black Metal at all. If you just want to provoke, punkrock or battle rap is better for you. Black Metal wears a cape in summer and swears that it's winter.

I think someone who is able to see the ridiculousness of what they enjoy has a deeper appreciation of it than someone who takes it all too seriously. I guess I prefer a clown who knows they're a clown over one who doesn't.
