if ever PM, i'd probably be a single term one because I'm fine with tax raises so long as they're actually going to worthwhile efforts

Crazy that most developed countries have extremely progressive tax systems because right wing parties cut middle class taxes as sugar to make the rich people tax cut medicine go down, while left wing parties only have the capacity to raise taxes on a constantly shrinking definition of "the rich"
the year is 20XX. Leftists carefully correct other leftists for railing on billionaires, because while *multi*billionaires are the enemy of the people, after yacht port fees, high roller binges in Monaco, and private jet rental costs, most billionaires have barely anything left over.
I'm really curious what's going to happen to the US if we are no longer the reserve currency some day because that's really the only thing allowing us to spend like we do.
The issue is that tax rises, in a vacuum, are always going to be unpopular and the consensus among left of centre parties is that you cannot shift public opinion and should not even try.
I do wonder if income depolarization will politically allow for a larger tax base
It feels to me like tax raises, while unpopular, are unpopular across the board and ironically that makes it easier to make more effective taxes than it is to make effective spending cuts that don't target disproportionately the more vulnerable parts of society just because the elites can lobby.
