Kinda like Paul Bunyan
Sky Daddy
a very big Trump.
Evangelical God is increasingly just Cthulhu
They like the idea of the great and powerful doing things for their own behalfs and no one else’s.
Why does the Big Person not simply eat all the smaller people
Glory I guess
I am more and more convinced that the retreat from classical theism produces really dreadful results.
Does atheism constitute "a retreat from classical theism" in the sense you're intending? I don't think so, but I'm not 100% sure. In this context it seems you're only commenting on the modern tendency to assume expertise in theopsychology and the awful conclusions that result.
I’m talking about Christian theology that abandons the “classical” doctrine of God, not about atheism.
Thanks. I thought so from context, but appreciate the clarification.
No problem!
You're the expert here since I know very little about Christianity generally and less about evangelicalism, but it seems to me that the "personal relationship" frame of evangelical Xianity creates a desire to personalize god more, leading to speculation about thoughts & feelings of god that ...
...end up causing a lot of problems and solving very few.
Possibly. There’s certainly an ideological preference for emotion (despite the rhetoric currently fashionable among those types), naive readings, and a suspicion of traditional theology as unchristian philosophy that takes them to strange places, often reinventing old heresies.
Karen Armstrong wrote a whole book about this in “The Case for God.” bookshop.org/p/books/the-... It includes an excellent history of US evangelicalism and yes, how it would be unrecognizable to medieval monks
yes, and the soul is a very small person, a homunculus inside us all.
I don't know all that much about theology but my personal take on American evangelicals is they've recreated the Christian-Pagan dichotomy from early Roman Christianity, with themselves in the role of the Pagans.
the radical socialist Catholic Dominican theologian Herbert McCabe basically called these people out uh, last century?
That's really something!
My kind of Catholic
This is beautiful, I ought to read more of his work
Rowan Williams says God is free. He is not bound to react to our actions as we do to each other, and what God freely chooses to do is to love, no matter what. Some people imagine God as the ultimate narcissist.
