Just now, I was out for a walk and they're building a bike lane on my street here in Edmonton. I compliment the "old school" concrete project labourer that it's "looking good". I can practically feel his "reaction" that this is what he has to build now, and he doesn't think much of the work!

I don’t know about Ford but I think that a lot of drivers see protected bike lanes as competition for space that will restrict traffic flow in service of a tiny handful of holier than thou bikers

A lot of drivers aren’t thinking clearly about it. As my family’s driver, I think protected bike lanes are awesome. People act like the lanes are cutting car space in half, when it’s like 0.05% of the road network.

It does feel like it would be helpful if the bike lanes weren't in the road and were instead safely separated to reduce anxiety and danger for both bikers and drivers but a whole portion of the biking community lost it over this suggestion so now we have a dangerous situation that makes everyone mad

Because the same Bill that addressed bike lanes also included a land grab and environmental regulation rollbacks. The bike lanes were a "squirrel!" to keep the media, urban activists and his suburban base from protesting a giveaway to real estate developers.

Many bike lanes are unusable. If I have to yield every 60 yards for someone's driveway or a minor road (which usually means stopping and checking for traffic or going slow), with glass and debris on the surface, inconsistent lanes, and then it just disappears at major junctions, it's a no from me.

That’s a sidewalk then not a bike lane. In my area there’s a bike path set near the road. The road has pot holes and is flooded 50% of the time. Bikers use the road making people going 30-35mph drop to 10. If you are doing that you’re a moron and an asshole.

In the UK the presence of an active travel lane (they are not solely bike lanes in UK despite the painted cyclist symbols) does not mandate that a cyclist has to use it. Use of the Highway is an inalienable right for all in UK law. Removing all cyclists from the road just fortifies habitual car use.
