basically the mamdani playbook: (1) be charismatic (2) focus on kitchen table issues in a way that sounds legitimately authentic and not focus-tested to death

he’s also just really good at short form video
like this is how people under 35 consume like 80% of their media (for better or worse…) and I can’t think of any other campaigns that are even decent at utilizing it?
It’s him and the homie @chiosse.bsky.social , everyone else is fighting for a distant 3rd
@aoc.bsky.social is good and @sanders.senate.gov is decent But @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social does set a new bar
Is AOC good at it or is she just liked by people who like short form video?
He’s also hot
The hot-people oriented nature of short form video, and therefore much of our culture, is so grim. But we gotta play the game 😅😩.
As soon as televised campaigning became commonplace it became increasingly about pageantry. Most of the first century of US presidents would have struggled to get elected in the visual media environment of the 20th century, let alone the 21st.
Halal cart issues
this is what all the polling has always said. The voters especially the non-college voters are socially conservative and economically left wing.
If you can convince people you will actually do something with left wing economics it is also more salient. I believe Harris's most popular proposal was price controls. @dicknixon.bsky.social
People are also confused, see pro life voters who actually think Abortion should be legal they just think its a bad thing to do, who than vote for the people promising to make it illegal.
At the very least I think it has been firmly established that the 56% of voters who actually where voting before trump and the pandemic are more socially liberal and economically conservative than non-voters and the additional 10% of people who have started voting since 2016
What are "kitchen table" issues? Are we having some national problem with legs falling off while people are eating dinner?
The kind of everyday issues people talk about at breakfast, which includes global affairs sometimes but also "food is getting expensive" "work is doing another round of layoffs" "Cindi's mom got deported" "there's another tent in the park" "the food bank keeps running out before the line does" &c
"For a city we can afford" is a pretty succinct slogan.
The obama playbook included 1. be charismatic and a great orator 2. Show up in national politics long enough before the election so people are aware of you but not long enough that people can't project their hopes onto you.
3). have NYC-DSA, who has developed probably the deepest, most organized, local election campaign infestructure in the nation backing you.
