That was a beatdown of the likes I’ve never seen and his final statement about nihilism being concealed behind traditional values and how dangerous that is, not just for conservatives but for society writ large? I hate how right he was honestly.
“On the one hand she’s a sociopath. On the other hand she’s pretty much the average female MUN/debate/student government kid from the early 2000s,” I think as I hear the matchmaking story
The last time I saw her (pre-2020), she turned a kid’s birthday party to the inquisition when a nice lawyer I know mentioned he’d won a big indigenous land rights case. 0-60 accusing him of manipulating the tribe on behalf of some nefarious woke environmental group and never backed down.
She is genuinely one of the most frightening people I have met and it’s hidden under this affected anachronistic propriety. Her husband is also evil. Adult convert to ROCOR I believe.
As someone who grew up Eastern Orthodox…ALL the converts are insane people
Yeah what is with that? I find the theology incredibly beautiful, but I really don’t think that’s what draws these people in. In Helen’s case I think she converted for her husband, who has a White Russian heritage. Hence, ROCOR.
Notably one of the parish priests there was a Black convert. Fortunately never talked to her about this…
Ethiopian perhaps? Orthodox is the dominant Christian religion there
Bet she doesn’t like that…
No he was like a snake handling Pentecostal from Texas. Great guy as far as I could tell.
lol wtf
Pretty sure that snake handling Pentecostals and adult converts to rocor are both categorically exempt from being great guys.
I still want to meet this individual because wild transition
I also hear that Catholic converts are the same way (Jd Vance, famous example)
Oh yeah for sure. A few of those in Helen’s circle.
I avoided them like the plague as a kid lol
By marriage, generally not though. The ones with no association by family I mean.
Doesn’t change much. It’s a wonder Helen didn’t catch on fire when they chrismated her.
lol this still makes me chuckle
I would fight her, lfg
Oof

Good lord. Sort of can't believe I'd never seen the whole clip before now
I could've used an audience cut to Brett Kavanaugh pulling sweatily at his shirt collar somewhere in there, but otherwise 10/10.
Omg that’s amazing
All that was missing from that clip was Jerry Springer.
Welp this is a new and fascinahorrifying rabbit hole! I'm intrigued that she refers to the creation and perpetuation of avoidable suffering as somehow a "Catholic" value (if I caught that correctly) and would like to toss her into the pool of retire Franciscan nuns I visited earlier this year.
it's enough of a Catholic thing that famously Mother Theresa was big into it, not that I have any other related examples to really show it as a broader thing. Lots of "suffering is holy for as The Lord suffered on the cross" and such iirc. I think Opus Dei are also known for it.
Dedicating one's own suffering is holy. Living a life of poverty and humility is holy. Inflicting it on others without their consent by obstructing their healthcare? Is very, very much not.
(She shouldn't worry; they were very elderly and don't have rulers. They do have walkers and canes, though, so maybe don't push it.)
This never gets old
My IRL story: she dresses like a cupcake.

When this went down everyone in my corner of online sympathized with her but these sympathies may have been misplaced?
Oh to have been seated at a table next their post-panel dinner.
oh my god he intellectually slaughtered her in broad daylight and never stopped smiling the whole time.
This premise of "we shouldn't reduce suffering because it builds character and fosters [insert societal benefit]" never, ever applies to THEM, for whom the threshold of acceptable suffering is "got suspended from social media platform we use for free and whose terms we agreed to beforehand."
holy shit wtf did i just watch. i think the laughter in the room is what does me in, i can't imagine any reaction other than silent horrified rubbernecking
oh my god she dumped him *3 days* before this panel? they couldn't have sat them with a buffer in between? jfc what a moment to put on cspan
I need a cigarette
Looked her up and this is the first thing I see. I feel like I just stumbled upon an iceberg of deep lore.
This is primo content.
Hooooly shit. How has this been unknown to me for 14 years?
