It's also a good time to remind people that the Church has its own internal politics that doesn't cleanly map onto contemporary US politics.
He’s sort of everyone’s pope. He’s both an American and a Peruvian citizen, he has Creole ancestry, he’s White Sox fan, he supports the Ukrainians etc. And the people who don’t like him seem to be the reactionary Nazi set. 🤷🏻♂️
There was nothing lib about JPII, quite the opposite. Francis & Leo have restored my faith
The fact that he’s from the States but spent so much of his career in South America far away from his home country’s conservative clergy is a very telling aspect of his biography
Also I think Leo being elected tells us that there will probably never be an Italian pope in our lifetimes
If things worked out fairly there wouldn't be an Italian Pope until like the year 3200
