half of the independence vote in Quebec now is that "if we don't leave the Confederation, the Anglophiles are going to great replace us with Anglo-speaking Indian students" this is not an exaggeration

French-Canadians have a legitimate gripe when the are overwhelmingly under represented and underinvested despite a couple of Trudeaus
Sounds like a skill issue
Ok, that's a statement that needs some support to be taken seriously.
I’d be interested to hear about underinvestment, but they’re certainly not underrepresented in any aspect of the federal government
franco-canadians in the maritimes getting A LOT of weight
That is very not true, Quebec holds its own just fine on the federal level. Our main problem right now is our corrupt provincial government (but we're hardly an exception in that either!)
They're overrepresented, and they literally drain the treasury with all the concessions they get.
IMHO probably one of the greatest political missteps of the past 20 years was associating progressive politics broadly in the Anglophone world with, "we're going to replace you and that's good."
One of the bleak things about the Money and the Ethnic Vote incident now is that in the moment there was immediate and near-universal condemnation. Even the audience of sovereigntists Parizeau is speaking to lets out an audible gasp of horror.
The CBC broadcast is a great watch for this. Before Parizeau’s speech everyone is talking about a “moral victory” for the Yes side and after even the pro-independence pundits are all but saying the cause is dead.
It really sucks how there is currently cross-ideological support for vastly limiting international students in Canada. It is already leading to massive cuts at universities, when they could be siphoning people who intended to study (or teach) in the US.
