it is sort of baffling that Falkner is a Lib Dem who is hostile to trans rights while the party paper is basically extremely reasonable on trans rights www.libdemvoice.org/why-are-uk-t...

tbh i wonder how much of it comes out of people who joined LibDems during the Coalition period
Falkner is crossbench now! (has been since 2019) But also she was ennobled under Charles Kennedy so not the Coalition's fault. (likewise, Emma Nicholson defected to the party in 1995 and then was ennobled in 1997 and also probably played a role in radicalising JKR (she co-founded Lumos))
Coalition-era Lib Dems who hung around skew pro-trans, ime, though that experience is stuff like "being in the Lib Dem soc at uni a few years post-Coalition" so maybe not objective.
The Lib Dem membership trends extremely establishment and that's the section of society that's seen the greatest transphobic radicalisation. Plus a lot of LDs on quangos end up becoming very detached from the party mainstream - see also Lord Carlile as independent reviewer of terror legislation .
Falkner's not a Lib Dem anymore. But yeah a few of the Lib Dem or ex Lib Dem lords are transphobes. The membership and MPs are solidly pro-trans, though. The thing with Lords is you can't really get rid of them once you've appointed them.
To caveat: the Lib Dem leadership and especially Ed Davey have not been good enough on opposing the government's anti-trans moves.
