CP needed Guehi to get throu Conference League qualifiers. That's why Liverpool didn't bid. I don't know how Guehi feels about staying other than he said he's happy to see out his contract; a good thing. But the club has screwed him up cos they said he could leave, and changed their mind last minute

All I’ve seen from Liverpool fans so far is that it was Palace’s responsibility to replace Guehi early because there was a suggested interest but with no bid. We’ll never know because Liverpool didn’t bid early enough in the window to find out.

My point stands that Palace knew he wanted to leave. He won't sign an extension. They don't want to let him leave for free, and plan to sell. And he'll need to be replaced. It's a reasonable to expect that Palace would've already signed his replacement.

Palace heavily vet players for professionalism hence neither him or Eze forcing moves, so him wanting to leave wasn’t a deciding factor. He’s not leaving now so Palace don’t need the replacement yet. It’s also reasonable to expect a team that’s suggested interest all summer not to bid last minute.

Did Liverpool mention to Crystal Palace that they were interested in Marc Guehi in June/July which gave Palace enough time to sign a proper replacement? After they priced out with their first choice, Palace could pivot to their preferred list of candidates, but they redacted too slowly.

Liverpool bid too late and Palace weren’t willing (which was within their rights) to bid for replacements until one had come in. “Interest” doesn’t mean the selling club, without clarity of the value of the bid and a manger who didn’t want to let him go, should be obliged to seek a replacement.

Liverpool mention the interest in June or earlier, thus giving Crystal Palace enough time to sign a replacement while negotiating for the deal for both parties. I understand that Glasner was making a fit about not letting Guehi go, especially with a replacement. bsky.app/profile/phil...

Liverpool didnt negotiate the deal with both parties. They made sure Guehi was interested and then tried to force Palace to sell last minute, which didn’t suit Palace/Glasner on the end and so he didn’t move.

Is it possible that Liverpool “waited” until after the Community Shield out of respect for the Crystal Palace? 🤷🏽‍♀️ After the Community Shield, Crystal Palace had three weeks to find his replacement. Is it possible that Liverpool and Crystal Palace negotiated behind the scenes until August..

when Liverpool made their first public bid? Palace still had all summer to find his replacement because Parrish knew that Guehi was on the last year of his contract.

Yes. That’s how it works, Liverpool make the bid, then Palace can look at the terms, the fee and the timing to divide if it works for them, which it didn’t. The idea that’s it’s Palace’s responsibility to do what Liverpool want in order to allow them to buy the player is bizarre.

I can’t believe you’re claiming that it was Palace’s responsibility to find a replacement before Liverpool bid for Guehi. 🤣 It’s Liverpool’s responsibility to find an acceptable deal at an acceptable time with the club and player. They failed.

Palace failed their club captain, who was interested in the move. He did not a make fuss and probably mentioned early in the window to give enough time to find his replacement. Do not put all blame on Liverpool. Did we both clubs overplay their hands? Yes

I’m not saying it was an ideal situation for Palace, they accepted the offer once it finally arrived (subject to a replacement) but couldn’t find an alternative on deadline day despite trying. Liverpool have to shoulder responsibility for the bid being that late, which appears to be the main issue.

Guehi has a contract with the club, and the club are not required to release him unless their terms are also met. You’ve now moved on the speculating about internal conversations Palace had, because you’ve run out of reasons not to see how Liverpool failed to secure a player they wanted.

The deal failed because Crystal Palace did not find a replacement which I understand why Glasner did not want Guehi to leave. Parrish should get a lot of blame for that. www.thetimes.com/sport/footba...

The club’s hierarchy know that Guehi is not going to renew his contract. Is selling Eze enough to fund this past summer and future windows?

The Palace model is designed to buy good young players and sell them on for big fees, but that’s dependent on the terms being suitable and has to balanced against performance on the pitch. Palace wouldn’t have won the FA Cup if Guehi had left for Newcastle last summer for £70m.

Is it ideal, no, but it’s also not a disaster. The Eze money has brought in some reinforcements and Palace brought a new young CB in and time to look for Guehi replacements (plus Chadi Riad should be back at some point). Plus possibly Wharton moving for big money next summer.

Agree. Palace has let Glasner overstep his remit. From my experience as a LFC fan, it's a bad idea. Klopp decided to go over the recruitment folks cos of his success and made himself defacto SD, just like Glasner now. It stunted the squad development and wore him out. It won't end well. Just a guess

Glasner suggests players and Lacroix has been brilliant and Kamada found form for example, but he doesn’t overrule the club generally. Not unreasonable not wanting to lose Guehi after Olise and Eze sales. He also won the Europa League so understands the requirements of balancing league & Europe.

All these leads back to Parish, who I think is responsible for the Europa League fiasco and now this. I totally understand Glasner's position, even if I won't have had his way, unless he signs an extension.

Parish (or the 2 other owners!) could not have forced Textor to put his shares in a blind trust. Palace were also playing Millwall in the 5th round of the cup on the day of the UEFA deadline linked to meeting an incredibly unclear “decisive influence” rule.

PhillyRed @philyred.bsky.social

Parish knew of the existence of the rule, and the deadlines. He didn't ask Textor to set up a blind trust because he didn't think Palace could win the FA Cup. That's on him. If he asked and Textoe refused, then I can absolve him. He never asked.

It’s a risk bs reward consideration. Bigger risk to lose Guehi without a suitable replacement than to sell and risk relegation/manager leaving/poor replacement bought for decent money. Personally I think it was Liverpool who gambled, and if they lose CBs to injury it could cost Prem/UCL/cups etc.

Liverpool had 4 CBs last season and they were fine. Frankly, in my opinion, the Liverpool backup’s DM has more career as a CB than DM and looks better as a CB in English football/soccer. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ok well Konate may be out (TBC), so you lose him and Van Dijk at some point then we’ll find out how Gomez/Endo/Robertson manage as a CB partnership.

They knew of our interest since June or earlier. Forget our interest for a second. They knew he wasn't signing an extension and that they're not in a position to let him go for free. That means someone will pay $ for him. A competent CEO would've signed a replacement.

Palace turned down £70m for him last year, so Liverpool knew suitable terms needed to be met in a way that satisfies Palace and Glasner to be willing to let him go. Liverpool didn’t do this.

So, Steve Parish that said Palace can't afford to not sell him, has done what? He buckled to the pressure from his manager who threatened to walk away. A manager who has one year on his contract and can walk away when the next big job comes along? Great for the fans anyway and I hope Glasner extends

I expect Glasner to get a big offer next summer (he could have walked into the Leverkusen job this week if Guehi left) and leave, and Guehi to go in Jan for a low fee or free next summer. But they’d leave as our best ever manager and captain with love and Palace move on, maybe with the UCL trophy!

Palace fans are relatively happy with the window now it’s closed. The view was that a suitable replacement needed to come in OR Guehi stay. The club have moved on some unwanted players, kept Guehi, and brought in some reinforcements and overall it will be seen as a decent window.

We should revisit this a bit later in the season. Some Palace fans get annoyed with Parish every year during the window, and then we get to the end of the window having down the business we need to, the new players bed in and do well, and everyone moves on. 🤣
