I heard that the plaque from Alzheimer’s is an inflamatory response to a virus and that the shingles vaccine greatly reduces the chances of getting the disease. Don’t know if that’s true, but the vaccine is effective against shingles so I’m gonna get it anyway.

Yes, but if you have the virus in your body from having had chickenpox as I did as a child, it really doesn't matter how old you are you can still get the shingles. Yes, I am sure it is much worse after the age of 50. Point is, vaccines work. End of story. Get vaccinated against shingles.

Recommend getting vaccinated before a weekend (or whenever you have a couple of days off back-to-back) --I (and most people I know) have reacted to one or both with fever and chills. I had a distant relative hospitalized with shingles, so that is what encouraged me to get the shots.

I had the singles vaccine a few days ago. It was $265 out of pocket. I'm not in a risk group/age, so Medicare didn't cover it. I think it's a good idea if you can afford it. Anyone who has worked in aged care has sadly seen that virus reawaken in many older people as their immune systems wane.

Shingles.. Definitely NOT fun. Imagine a skin rash full of paper cuts. So sensitive slightest touch sets of a flash itch you just don't dare scratch. Even wind causes itch. I hate pills, but if I wanted to sleep, no choice. Constant pressure from a tight t-shirt helped. Should've listened to my doc😒

I got shingles a year ago. I was fortunate and only had a tiny patch on my rib cage area. The Dr. gave me an antibiotic and that was that. I will ask my Dr. about this, sounds beneficial to get anyway.

Yes it is. I had gotten just a small patch also and thought that was it, I didn’t need to get the shot now. Then I got it again! Slightly larger patch but still totally manageable so I figured that was the universes way of telling me I had better get the damn shot cause next time won’t be so mild!

FACTOID: Shingles is a virus. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections, though it is true sometimes docs give them if infection is associated with an otherwise viral episode. Or because people ask for them.

I was hesitant about getting the vaccine after hearing that you may get Shingles, but Shingrix doesn't have the Shingles virus in it, so you're not supposed to get it. I'm scheduled to get my 2nd shot in a couple of weeks. An ex-coworker had it on her face & suffered from permanent nerve damage.

I got Shingles back in the late 80’s, starting with a small rash on my back and considerable pain on my right side. At that time there was no approved treatment, but my doctor said he’d read in one of the journals that …

some have had good success treating the rash with Silvadene cream (normally used to treat burns) He told me to slather it on and cover it with a large bandage. The stuff was amazing. The pain was gone immediately, and I played even basketball that evening. The rash cleared up within a couple weeks.

My Bloody Vinyl Time @mybloodyvinyltime.bsky.social

I’m 53 so I can get it, but in Australian it’s free if you’re over 65 otherwise it’s at least $300 per dose. I think it should be free over 50…

A scientific study found shingles vaccine does reduce the probability of developing Alzheimer's. Shingles can also be dangerous, e.g. in a few cases causes blindness. The vax kicked me like a mule but it is *so* worthwhile.

I know that it's anecdotal, but my mom had mild case of shingles and then got vaccinated. She still succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease.

I got it a while back. I've seen what shingles can do to a person. Recommended.

Do, but give yourself the rest of the day off. You might experience a slight reaction, usually fatigue.

Nice! Thanks for this. I got my first Shingles vaccine about 3 weeks ago. Will be getting the second. Definitely get it—shingles is apparently extremely painful.

That would be fantastic. Interesting autoimmune diseases can be triggered by infection or virus or the treatment. Mine was triggered by doctor in Australia prescribing 2 super strong antibiotics for stomach bug that was successfully treated by Indian doctors when working there. Destroyed my gut.

This is great news for most people! Unfortunately I’m one of those in a few million that react terribly to vaccines (since I was a kid). I spent almost 2 years in bed with GB from the JnJ shot and I’m so afraid of going through that yet again. 😭

I'm too young to get the vaccine. But I've now had shingles twice. The second time was last year, and I still have postherpetic neuralgia. Not fun.

Definitely get that vaccine! An acquaintance didn’t & currently has shingles. I didn’t realize, but long after the rash is gone - even years - sudden acute nerve pain can continue, anywhere in the body.
