I heard that the plaque from Alzheimer’s is an inflamatory response to a virus and that the shingles vaccine greatly reduces the chances of getting the disease. Don’t know if that’s true, but the vaccine is effective against shingles so I’m gonna get it anyway.
Husband had shingles vaccine when first out. He now has Alzheimer’s. I would do a bit more research but the vaccine will protect against shingles which is terrible.

I had the singles vaccine a few days ago. It was $265 out of pocket. I'm not in a risk group/age, so Medicare didn't cover it. I think it's a good idea if you can afford it. Anyone who has worked in aged care has sadly seen that virus reawaken in many older people as their immune systems wane.

I had shingles. If there’s a way to avoid getting shingles, I highly recommend it. Also little known fact, if you get shingles on your scalp, it can go to your brain and kill you. It happened to my brother’s mother-in-law and none of us knew that was a thing that could happen.

My doctor says mid-October is the best time to get the latest flu shot and latest COVID booster. That gives maximum protection through the winter months. Hopefully an updated COVID booster will be announced soon.

I think this still very iffy. The disease is so complex. My grandfather, dad and my sister had Alzheimer’s. I know for a fact my sister and father had shingles vaccines. And I’m probably doomed.
Not necessarily. There have been a number of promising treatments that have been developed recently for slowing and in some cases reversing the memory loss. Don’t know if RFKj will ever let us have them but they are out there. I sincerely wish you good brain health!

I received the shingles vax and my shingles are worse than ever. Prior I had an outbreak twice a year. Now it’s monthly and the outbreak has shifted closer to my spine.

Some research shows that it helps so I took it. Other new research: A widely prescribed drug, gabapentin, can cause or really exacerbate Alzheimer’s . Low lithium levels can cause or exacerbate Alzheimer’s. Take 5mg per day to maintain normal levels. One egg per day decreases Alzheimer’s.

In 2022 I had shingles. It was extremely painful. Like going with your bare skin over asfalt during a motor cycle accident. My pain was zo bad. I spent a week in the hospital so I could get opiates for the pain. Get the vaccine!

Shingles.. Definitely NOT fun. Imagine a skin rash full of paper cuts. So sensitive slightest touch sets of a flash itch you just don't dare scratch. Even wind causes itch. I hate pills, but if I wanted to sleep, no choice. Constant pressure from a tight t-shirt helped. Should've listened to my doc😒
I got shingles a year ago. I was fortunate and only had a tiny patch on my rib cage area. The Dr. gave me an antibiotic and that was that. I will ask my Dr. about this, sounds beneficial to get anyway.
Yes it is. I had gotten just a small patch also and thought that was it, I didn’t need to get the shot now. Then I got it again! Slightly larger patch but still totally manageable so I figured that was the universes way of telling me I had better get the damn shot cause next time won’t be so mild!

I was hesitant about getting the vaccine after hearing that you may get Shingles, but Shingrix doesn't have the Shingles virus in it, so you're not supposed to get it. I'm scheduled to get my 2nd shot in a couple of weeks. An ex-coworker had it on her face & suffered from permanent nerve damage.

I got Shingles back in the late 80’s, starting with a small rash on my back and considerable pain on my right side. At that time there was no approved treatment, but my doctor said he’d read in one of the journals that …
some have had good success treating the rash with Silvadene cream (normally used to treat burns) He told me to slather it on and cover it with a large bandage. The stuff was amazing. The pain was gone immediately, and I played even basketball that evening. The rash cleared up within a couple weeks.
I’ve since gotten the vaccine too, but if you happen to get the disease, look into Silvadene.
Make sure you get both doses. It is definitely worth it.

A decade ago, I got it as soon as it came back in stock. It was on short supply for a long time. I would recommend getting it when you don’t have to go to work the next day because I was pretty sick (fatigue, chills) for about 24 hrs.

I'm one of the folks who lost vision in one eye because of shingles. Have ongoing atypical trigeminal neuralgia that affects the nerves in my eye, ear, face & scalp. Pain 24/7. Get the shingles shot. It may make you nauseated for a few days, but that's better than the pain of shingles.

Yes I read that. It's just a theory at this point, but interesting. And as far as the shingles vaccine, anyone who doesn't get it is a fool. You'll need two doses spaced apart, and will feel a little bit shitty for a day or so afterwards. Totally worth it.

I got shingles about two weeks after getting Covid and that pain was one of the worst pains I have ever had. It took well over a month for that to clear up. Nothing would come close to taking the edge off the pain. Excruciating pain 24 hours a day.

There is some evidence of this from an accidental real world trial — due to the way the vaccine was rolled out in the UK — significant reduction in Alzheimer’s risk after vaccination.
If the reason for the plaque formation was definitively understood there would be an effective treatment. Worked in Vaccine Safety. Also have had shingles. The vaccine is the better option. But talk to a real health care provider. Social media advice is not always the best way to decide.

Pam, I've been working on that theory and compared dementia in people with and without shingles vaccination. There are a few studies showing weak 'protection' but I'm not convinced. Get the shingles vaccine to protect against shingles and if it does something to help with dementia, we'll take that.

For those who need to know, you can get the shingles series if you are under the age of 50, if you are immune compromised. I am a cancer survivor and I take cancer meds still. I'm 46. I walked into Walgreens in Arizona and asked and they said they'd give it to me. So I got the series early. FYI

Alzheimer's is not caused by amyloid plaque. You should get the vaccine anyway for shingles, as you say.

I received both shots. Prepare to feel yucky from them. However, this is phenomenal to know, if it is true. Even if not, shingles is awful—and I don’t want a bad version. Happy to have gotten my shot!
The super great thing that I learned is that after only two shots, I am set against shingles for life. I had chickenpox as a little kid so am super happy that I could get vaccinated against shingles, caused by a virus already in my body, before the current crazy regime decided to end vaccinations.

In the socialist hell-hole that I live in many vaccines are very cheap or free. In the past couple of months I've had the flu shot ( it's winter here ), the yearly covid booster and the two shingles shots. Apparently having shingles doesn't confer livelong immunity. All shots had no upfront costs.
Covid and flu shots are free in this socialist hell-hole too. The shingles vaccine isn’t free yet, unless over 75. Paying $400 for the two shot course was money well invested, considering the alternative.

I rec’d mine this last spring. (I’ve also had shingles in the past) It’s a 2 dose series. I had no ill effects from the first vaccine but I started to feel under the weather, as warned, about 6 hours after the 2nd injection. I felt ick for approx 12 hours. I’m thankful for this vaccine.

1) Watch my very strong, stoic FIL reduced to a quivering mass by the excruciating pain of shingles that ran across his chest and side. Get the vaccine. 2) We don’t yet know what long-term rebound affects Covid might have. It may make shingles look like a walk in the park. Get that vaccine too.
My doc said get it. I got one dose a few years ago. It was very impactful - I'm going to get the second dose. I had shingles vaccinations after I had shingles (more than once). So, I'm approaching "shingled out".

From the vaccine or having shingles? I’ve had shingles twice before there was a vaccine, and it was mild. Now I’m avoiding the vaccine bc I’ve watched two people deal with nerve pain/damage from the vaccine.
I have issues from having actual shingles. I wish I could be vaccinated for it, but I'm too young.
I had it at 18 and 56, mild with no issues that I’m aware of. Not sure where that leaves me in terms of any immunity or vaccine eligibility. My PCP hasn’t mentioned it.
I would ask about it. In the US, it's still recommended even if you've previously had shingles. My first time was very mild. My 2nd time was definitely not mild.
The nerve pain from PHN is way worse than any side effects from th vaccine. If I could I would but I have to wait a year from my infection to get it.
I've asked if I could get the vaccine early (I'm 39), but even with 2 prior shingles cases, I've had several providers say I need to wait until age 50. Which I think is kinda bogus, given the severity of my last occurrence 😏

A scientific study found shingles vaccine does reduce the probability of developing Alzheimer's. Shingles can also be dangerous, e.g. in a few cases causes blindness. The vax kicked me like a mule but it is *so* worthwhile.
I know that it's anecdotal, but my mom had mild case of shingles and then got vaccinated. She still succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease.
Of course, I know folks who got shingles, it’s bad.

That would be fantastic. Interesting autoimmune diseases can be triggered by infection or virus or the treatment. Mine was triggered by doctor in Australia prescribing 2 super strong antibiotics for stomach bug that was successfully treated by Indian doctors when working there. Destroyed my gut.

Definitely get that vaccine! An acquaintance didn’t & currently has shingles. I didn’t realize, but long after the rash is gone - even years - sudden acute nerve pain can continue, anywhere in the body.
