Not that this makes it better, but historians say it’s named after a Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea (Lee is a misspelling), despite folks claiming the more famous R.E. Lee (because, racism). (I grew up in MO 🫤).

I just moved from there. I 100% believe the grandsons account that they were trying to name it after Robert E Lee hence the spelling.
Well, the South’s gonna South, so, of course the grandson made that claim (true or not, if it’s repeated often enough …)
Idk seems very intentional when they could have spelled it like Lea instead
I totally get that, but in the 1800’s, even mid century, spelling was very fluid. Not saying you’re wrong, though, just wishing my home state were better people.
