The thing is, do you truly trust AI to accurately describe an image or video?

jun 27, 2025, 11:08 am • 3 0 • view
avatar
willow @wlo.moe

images? yeah! i made a bot for another platform that uses gemma and the descriptions it gives in the majority of cases are accurate. obviously there's hiccups at times but it's way better than having *no* alt text at all videos i'm unsure about, i haven't tested it

jun 27, 2025, 11:14 am • 1 0 • view
avatar
ציפורה @jojewlion.bsky.social

You know what's better than either? Manually doing alt text yourself. If AI had told me that the sky was blue, I'd wanna check outside to be sure it wasn't wrong because it's just making shit up.

jun 27, 2025, 11:18 am • 6 0 • view
avatar
willow @wlo.moe

i write alt text manually myself, but fact is most people don't and most people won't, which is where llms can really help visually impaired people or those who might get overstimulated.

jun 27, 2025, 11:21 am • 3 0 • view
avatar
blaze @blazypika2.bsky.social

people who don't do use it, don't because they don't care, they're not going to magically care just because there a tool that would make it easier. especially if that tool is inaccurate anyway.

avatar
ציפורה @jojewlion.bsky.social

I know this, my wife is blind. If people are too lazy to manually do it, what makes you think those same people are gonna make sure the description is actually accurate?

jun 27, 2025, 11:53 am • 5 0 • view
avatar
willow @wlo.moe

i'd assume that the people using ai for this are people that recognise the important of alt text, and *would* check. obviously, some people aren't going to check, people are silly, but at least this way there is SOMETHING instead of nothing, right? i sometimes have visual processing issues, and ...

jun 27, 2025, 1:21 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
willow @wlo.moe

... the smallest bits of context can help. so even if what the ai outputs isn't the most accurate, it could still be helping someone, which in my opinion is a net positive

The alt text that's included in embedded GIFs is completely useless. I always have to redo it because whenever it isn't just flat-out wrong about the contents, it's horoscope-level vague. Entrusting accessibility to a nonsense generator is worse than not caring.

yeah there's issues with gen ai, unfortunately. it's not going away though, so why not use it to help people? ~two months ago i calculated the carbon emissions that my bot produces per image, and it's minuscule, ~0.03072 grams of CO₂ per image

"Not the worst thing possible" and "good, worth supporting" are two different things. In all cases, any generative model trained on arbitrary datasets without credit permission is intrinsically bad, even if there are levels of bad within that set.

I don’t have a problem with the concept of AI — I mean it’s right out of sci-fi and it’s cool we live in a time when we can experience that! But AI, as you said, is not one thing. In general, I’m more concerned with a) the environmental impacts, b) the copyright infringement, c) the human rights

It's ridiculously excessive. I tried to find if any artist made art of a giant platypus attacking a city & couldn't find any. So since it didn't exist & I wasn't going to pay to have an original made AI it was! So I don't know exactly what this image plagiarized & I'm sure no one else can either.
