But Labour aren't saying that! They need to be loud and clear that this is both legally and morally fine, and why, actually defend themselves on a point of principle, rather than just saying "the Tories were worse" and implicitly accepting that they're in the wrong as well.

Two problems with this. First, if you are explaining, you are losing. Secondly, to the general public, most of these shenanigans regarding second homes look awful, and the question whether it is technically within or outside the arbitrary rules MPs set for themselves is neither here nor there.
