The left side issues aren’t just about the quality of the winger. Rice/Merino/Havertz aren’t particularly creative and MLS (who possibly is) gets drawn forward and caught out of position - we regularly see opponents targeting the space behind him. And it looks like nothing’s changed?

Dowman is showing all the promise we were hoping to expect. He could already be Ødegaard's understudy without a shadow of a doubt if the rules weren't what they are in English football. But he'll get there. Solutions have to be found for reality though.

I was also very puzzled at the midfield selections, when we were two games from the season starting. I can understand wanting to rest players like Rice and Odegaard a bit, but they still played. I’d have started them and pulled them at the half or 60’.

I think them developing relationships with Gyokeres should be a top priority at this point. Zubimendi, too, who I think is going to be critical in linking up with him.

Great points about defensive issues and a lack of continuity when it comes to selection. My only guess is that we are managing minutes and we’ll see a more full strength side on Saturday. Inside the stadium I just felt we weren’t fast enough in the press and too weak on second balls, which is odd.

I think we have to acknowledge VG and NM have only been with us a week, and they're the guys to bring something different. Change will be gradual, I think.

My takeaways... Gabi is the heart of the defense, Kiwor isn't him. In fact for the right price he can move on. Confident in Christian to fill that spot. Arteta really playing with lineups, would have liked to see VG get to play with the better midfield that came on when he left.

We need Big Gabby back and fit.
