Home and school are needed. Only parents who "lost the war" in '39 passed onto their children that grounding. The schools under Franco didn't. Two generations have been deprived of any sort of political awareness, but the young still show empathy is there, as they did after the Valencia floods.
It also depends where in Spain you live apparently. I have friends in Catalonia and their teenagers/young adult children are very politically aware and knowledgeable about Franco - as are their friends
It's not really about regions. It's urban vs rural. In Catalonia we have political awareness stained with the curse of independence, that is the kiss of death to progressive politics. The so-called 'procès' has been really awful. Hope it continues to wind down.
Home & school are needed for all things. Obviously, I was referring to history only, which most parents aren't equipped to teach. I always use should appropriately, it implies not necessarily. So, children should leave school with a good educational grounding in history. This is the role of school.
Not under a fascist dictatorship. Then school turns into either indoctrination or vacuum. Ours lasted 40 years.

It's the consequences that are important to me. You can't learn from the past if you're brought up in a vacuum... by design. It takes ages to mend that. Eg. Spaniards migrated as recently as the 60s. And their grandchildren can today be learning to shout "go home migrants". That vacuum worries me.
I understand your point of view and sympathise completely. My only problem is that it is out of context with the post and thread I was responding to. Learning from the past is why we have educational institutions, we have to hope that they are enabled and willing to pass that information on.
