An politician in a position of power can be Primaried by another person in the sake party as a way of getting them out in favor of the new politician. They run against the incumbent in their party's primary election to see who runs for the office in the next general election.

I think I get it. So at a presidential level, it would be like Hillary Clinton going against Bernie Sanders to push him out of being up for election later?

I couldn't think of another example at the moment. McConnel would probably be better if another GOP member were to try and take his position. It's 6am and insomnia has had me rotating in bed like a convenience store hot dog for hours.

I appreciate trying, but that doesn't tell me what it means as a verb in this context. My Google-fu is failing me because I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with a primary number or primary school.

When an elected official is not representing the values of their party and District, someone else can run against them in the primary. Shorthand for that is “primarying them.” These primary fights can unseat elected officials who have grown disconnected from the people they serve 1/2

But these kinds of family feuds can also be very expensive and risk splitting the party and alienating a good chunk of voters.
