There is one more aspect. When one comes in USA to work on visa, there are no protections. No abilities to complain about any abuse or workplace. The moment they do, they can lose employment and visa. So in a way, visa workers provide slave labor.

My district has a welding and riveting program set up as a direct feed into Boeing. Boeing saw the need and was instrumental in setting it up. The district also has programs that feed into nursing, hair and makeup, culinary arts, and more. Many high schools in WA state are set up the same way.

Many public school systems have robust vocational education programs that allow 11th & 12th graders who are not taking college placement courses to earn credentials in hotel & restaurant management, HVAC, EMT, construction trades, automotive, etc.

Having worked multiple different industries, the bulk of which consistent of retail/sales, there is no real training. You’re lucky if you get so much as an hour to be shown the ropes and any shadow time depending on the company. Some have training videos I suppose?

In my state over the past 10 years they have started vocational training programs in maybe 5-10 schools. They train students in various trades in the last years of HS at an offsite school with some required classes at the school. The final classes are completed after graduation for trade jobs

Some areas have vocational training in high schools, but in most places there are trade schools or certification programs in 2 year colleges/community colleges for skilled trades (HVAC, Auto mech, etc). Other things...hope a coworker will teach you enough to not get fired.

That’s true, as public schools are funded by property taxes. In townships with neighborhoods of McMansions the tax base is high and provides $ for schools. In townships where there are few homes owned (apartment buildings, businesses) the homes that do exist are often of lower assessed value, so

Oh please you get free PUBLIC school education up to 18 in the US which sets you up in most states for getting the minimum wage which in most states is NOT enough to live on. Many European countries get free college where they can hope for a decent living and better quality of life.

Sounds good, Here in Finland, even the poorest unemployed families have to send their children to school until they get a vocational qualification. If you have the desire, you can get 2 degrees. Education leading to a degree is always free.

Finland has one of the best education and social systems in the world. My brother did his Master’s in Helsinki. Aside from culture shock from riding the train (flat affect and very little emotive displays) he enjoyed his time there.

We have that too, at least in NY. Free high quality public education until you graduate high school at age 17-18. You can also take vocational classes in high school if you want, like mechanics, welding, plumbing, cosmetology….its free.

I have managed teams of developers for projects you probably use every day. Under client financial pressure, we hired Indian developers because they were paid 1/10th the hourly rate of Americans. Their code dumps failed every QA test and required constant rewriting. In the end, they cost much more.

I remember back in the 2000s companies were replacing American software engineers with outsourced engineers in India. They even had the American engineers training their replacements as part of the severance package. The companies had the money. They wanted more and screwd American workers.

I was at AT&T when Lucent spun off. In order to increase the projected ROI, they brought in IGS H1-Bs to replace all the American support staff. It was a case of train your replacement or get out. Me too. So what I do is each time I do one of these odd jobs I try to code some of the steps at some level with the thought that next time I do a similar task I'll have my own coded tool to help. Ie automate as much as you can of your own job.

Worked on amazing teams 10 out of my 11.5 years here. But

I love what I do, but if I had to start over again, I'd probably ask my past self if there's a less ageist/sexist field she can get into. Programming as a career isn't sustainable long term because of this, there's a reason so many devs end up in middle management (🤮+ was never an option for me)

I was a Unix and system programmer already - but they gave me more to be better for the company. Over the years I saw this die, and training budgets dried up. Quality left the building long ago.

Selecting a line of work that doesn’t require a degree and still pays well is an option. Say you save $50k/yr on tuition and average $60k in your first 4 years of work, you are $440k ahead of a grad day 1. 20 years invested in $SPY $440k =~ $3m. Debt free just means someone paid.

Worked in tech most of my life. Getting a company to train people has been rare and often difficult. They'd rather poach someone with those skills from another company than invest in the people they have (and then be afraid those people will be poached by other companies).

I don't know anyone in Europe making six figures in my role, while in the US that's the starting salary. That being said, you get a lot more for your dollar overseas. 4€ is a good croissant and an espresso based drink. In the US that doesn't even cover half the cost.

Well that would be because we are charged an arm and a leg for literally everything. Housing and groceries take up more than half of most people's paychecks. Healthcare is unaffordable for everyone but the top 10%. Someone in the US can make $100k a year and still go bankrupt trying to live.

You're correct. Now go back to about 1983 and the "No Child Left Behind" Act. This legislature led the federal government to tie funding to test results, the tests primarily being multiple choice. So teachers taught to the tests; critical thinking skills went by the wayside. Dumbing down of America.

I think this take is a little divorced from reality. Tech as a sector has layed off almost half a million employees flooding the market. There is no shortage of people complaining that they can’t find a job with 10+ years of experience. Foreign brains is not a necessity or a solution.

Yeah your personal anecdote isn’t very meaningful - take a larger sample from say LinkedIn. My own experience is the 90s were the best, but since the H1B con job wages and opportunities are depressed. I was billing $100-$125 an hour in the ‘90s, now more like $75. Comfortable still but lost a bit

I agree, but we’re getting squeezed on both ends of the spectrum. As we price people out of college and those same people reject unskilled employment, the answer on both ends is immigrant labor. All of this is compounded by a low birth rate and good old American racism. We are our own worst enemy.

AI can't preform physical labor, and automation isn't really viable for anything that doesn't take place within a controlled space (ex. A factory). You can get a robot to assemble a car in a factory, you can't really get one to come to your house & fix your pipes.

That's not true at all. Americans aren't too dumb for higher education. There are plenty of Americans who are educated enough to fill the jobs given to immigrants on H1B visas. It's about control employees dependent on their jobs to stay here don't ever rock the boat, never disagree with management.

Lot of those trades aren't really gonna go away. Unless robots get both significantly better and significantly cheeper, they just aren't viable in a lot of trades beyond manufacturing. I don't think we're gonna have robot plumbers in 2055.

Every kid has access to a Chromebook in our school. They rolled out remote learning day 1 of COVID lockdown. I didn't even realize they are Title 1 due to lots of low income kids. We have some of the best outcomes in the state. Good pay too.

This is not so simple, I am almost done with my Canadian PhD in AI and the best place to go to is the bay area. The most ambitious people like to go there for their career. I am German and there is nothing comparable in the EU. I agree on educating people and basic social welfare for everyone.
