As someone who invested in Chinese solar companies during the Obama era, sold my stock during the bubble, and has checked on it periodically ever since, I can tell you: Chinese solar companies take on massive debt, make very little profit, and get bailed out by the Chinese govt, but don't profit.

Chinese solar is winning the market *because* they don't need to profit - the Chinese government backstops them with loans because the policy priority (energy independence, relationships in the developing world, market development, decarbonization, and lower pollution) outweigh the financial losses.

But let's not mistake China's willingness to do what we should have done for the sake of the world (invest hundreds of billions in producing the solar cells needed to save the world from global warming) for some profit center. It is nothing of the sort. China is hedging its bets, not profiting.

It's very important looking at charts to pay attention to what they're actually measuring. Funny enough, pew actually has another visualization that shows that opinions are split, NOT positive across the board.

And the Trump administration is making every effort to return to the age of coal. Regression is real. Where another state is forging ahead with solar, wind and is making strides in fusion technology whilst programs are axed and research cancelled the outcome is already determined.

China has already built an electric dependent infrastructure. Their current high speed rail system operates at 220 mph. There are nearly 30,000 miles of track, most with a design speed of 240 mph. The latest Acela maxes out at 160 mph but only on 40 of a total of 450 miles of service.

aug 30, 2025, 5:57 am • 2 0 • view
avatar
futuristic-hexagon.bsky.social @futuristic-hexagon.bsky.social

Should add that Acela runs on the NEC, which already was used to higher speed passenger traffic since the days of the Pennsylvania RR 100 years ago. Virtually no level crossings and 100+ was common. We haven't had much since, just Brightline between FEC and Orlando Airport, and that's not true HSR.

aug 30, 2025, 2:18 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Steve @rapidlydownhill.bsky.social

China’s advantage, which could also be the USA, is on the longer routes where replacing air travel becomes logical. France, where HSR flourishes, has banned flights under 2.5 hours in favour of rail. The reduction of environmental impact is significant.

Steve @rapidlydownhill.bsky.social

Similarly there isn’t much progress in the UK. We had a train that ran at 125 mph since 1979. But since then, improvements in speed have been slow. We do have some at 186 mph, and HS2 line will improve that.

aug 30, 2025, 2:37 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
futuristic-hexagon.bsky.social @futuristic-hexagon.bsky.social

And 125mph I'd what Brightline runs at. And since it largely doesn't run on dedicated rail, it has a tendency to hit drivers and folks trespassing on the tracks. The US had gone really backwards in rail travel too. Look at Amtrak's network in the late 1970s, and look at it now.

When I heard they were bringing the Floridian back, I thought it was going to be following the route it did up to 1979, running from Chicago, through TN, AL, and the panhandle, all without inter city service. Instead, it was the Silver Star and Capitol Limited combined into a Long Trip to Chicago.
