It's a standard playbook — for dominant groups to advance narratives that discredit groups they want to marginalize: "They're doing it for attention." Any woman who's reported a man for harassment or assault has been accused of being motivated by the desire for attention
When I was in middle and high school, every bisexual girl was “just doing it for attention”. Quite a few of my friends later on said they delayed coming out as bi because they didn’t want to be seen as just doing it for boys or whatever.
I realized I was bi in middle school while having a convo with a friend who was complaining about someone else being bi for attention. I put off dealing with it until college lmao
I am 50 and still not out as bi to many family members.
I’m 30 and the only family members I’m out to as bi are the ones who are also queer lol (and I’m not even out to all of them!)
