That’s clearly not what they meant tho. They didn’t say they can’t do this therefore it didn’t happen - they said kidnapping is a more proper word to describe it. Because it is.

A child taken is a child taken is a child taken. Waste 90% of your energy arguing which term to apply to an illegal act and 10% figuring out how to fight it. Or flip the numbers and do something. That’s what I’M SAYING.
Really slowly. If people hear "deported" they think that is a legal thing to do. If people hear "kidnaped" they know it's illegal and wrong. Hope that helps you understand what so many are telling you.
I’ve been calling my reps, organizing protests, joining local orgs, volunteering my time. All while chronically ill. So what have you been doing? The fact is that the majority people hear deportation and assume they ‘deserved it for being illegal.’ Calling it what it is clues in people who
- are less politically involved.
Good you’re doing 100% more than 80% of the people just typing on social media. Me doing anything is called foreign interference.
Hi! Fellow Canadian here. We're both doing something by speaking up and saying this is d disgusting and *noticed abroad*.
And for that matter: until this "51st State" 💩 is fully-disavowed HISTORY, there's no such thing as Canadians doing "foreign interference" on the US - it's self-defence.
You do realize the people posting about it on social media aren’t posting their acts of protest online because it’s dangerous, and not because they aren’t doing anything, right?
Genuinely curious. No malice intended and Maybe a bit naive on my part but why is it dangerous? Please and thank you for a response
They can track you and arrest you. For example, in 2020, the FBI tracked down a protester’s shirt to an etsy listing and were able to find her identity from there. Some of us have family we’re fighting for so making them harder to track down is important
I appreciate the open mindedness. This explains why it’s important waaay better than I can in 300 characters haha, if you have time ^^ activistchecklist.org
Now I’m intrigued! I’ve bookmarked it and will read it thoroughly tonight!
Holy crap! Wait. How did they get the ‘power’ to do this? Under what legislation? Aside: thank you for the honest answer.
The articles I linked explained a bit, but I don’t actually know the “official” legislation for it if I can be honest. I know it falls under national security though.
Words matter. If the press stopped parroting what the administration wants for them to say, and started calling it "kidnapping ", then more people would understand the severity of what's happening. It's one of the ways that a difference can be made, it's small, but it can be effective.
So effective that when I read the word 'kidnapping' in a post that goes on to say "One parent cannot take a minor child abroad without written permission from other parent.", it immediately strikes me as an attempt to absolve govt. action, & accuse the mother of kidnapping. Words & CONTEXT matter.
Bluesky might be a think tank where you argue ‘terms’ then sit back satisfied you’ve done your part - what I’m saying is call it what you want. They r still gone. Never to return. What are YOU doing about it???
They seem to be doing more about it than you, if just from this exchange.
Defining what they are doing using a term that conveys its criminality and not letting them get away with hiding behind a term that describes a lawful act IS doing something. You're getting really, really angry at the wrong f**king people here.
We’re here now because they owned the language. Apathetic voters see the headlines and language and “it’s not so bad.” Things change when those apathetic voters feel guilty. They don’t want to do anything, but they also don’t want to feel complicit. They change their votes if they feel complicit.
Propaganda is a powerful thing. Before you demand details from others about what they're going to do about it, how about YOU outline what YOU are going to do about it. I voted for Kamala Harris, and I voted for Marc Pocan because I knew what Trump would do. I call my congress people
Now who's arguing semantics?
