Yeah this has most certainly held up
I don't think we really have a culture of populism here. Populist parties in Europe are like "we will cancel student loans, and also murder every migrant we see" "populist" parties here are like "we will murder every migrant we see, and every brown person we see, and every trans person we see, and-
If populism is understood as appealing to "common" concerns and railing against elites, then America's common concerns are murdering minorities, and the elites they want to murder are just more minorities
i believe economic populism is the correct and moral choice, and also that it alone ain't sufficient. in the long run, a fairly functioning economic system *might* reduce the appeal of white supremacy -- but in my experience, economic success really doesn't determine whether you're a bigot or not
there are troops (soon to be armed?) on the streets of multiple US cities. the child tax credit is a good thing and we should reduce child poverty as much as we can if not outright eliminate it, but that nor similar policies are in any way "resist[ing]" authoritarianism.
I made a few trades on e*trade in favor of companies that support my worldview. I’m a rebel and you know it. I also like my rosé chilled.
Yup. As much as I go off about how democrats could win elections in landslides if they embraced left wing economic populism, it obviously doesn't do jack to stop militarized coercive force by the state.
it's still fundamentally an electoral strategy that relies on voters properly crediting democrats and rewarding them, which feels like the logic of some far off dimension
So many of these “economic populists” are just fascists and bigots who want the government to give free stuff to white people only
