actual problem for dems is not that pols regularly use academic jargon (they mainly don't), nor is it that activists and academics have their own jargon that can be alienating to the uninitiated. it's that us media functions like a large scale libs of talk, pushing that jargon to the uninitiated

I have a half-baked belief that the left isn’t jargony enough. “Toxic masculinity” is a pair of words that people can kind of reduce meaning from without assistance. RWers talk about Holocaust denial via abstruse code that takes 10 mins to explain to a normie.

Eh, that blames a chemical rather than a socially constructed phenomenon.

So some sophomore learning in college learning about something for the first time will be expressing a view or working out feelings about life difficulty—and they’ll pounce on it as a massive example of frightening social change for scaredy-cat white guys or a sign of ‘the dumbness of the left’

But then they ascribe it directly to Democrats who usually have no clue about how this person is going to use a reading their teacher assigned to them or some dorm-room discussion. They then massage it into a whole thing. This is what they did with ‘critical race theory.’

This is exactly right—but it’s not just Libs of TikTok—Rufo and other think tank fascists stalk various discourse communities all around the internet, looking for red meat to throw to the outrage machine. This was pioneered on reddit where grouchy men would find an ‘SJW’ to do a 2 minutes hate on.

Being a good citizen means educating yourself if you’ve never had a good grounding in politics. I was lucky enough to have active liberal parents who set off a fire in my belly for politics but I learned as much as I could on my own. Always will.

IMO the flip side of conservatives complaining about liberal cultural hegemony is they benefit from the mainstream having little idea what they're like. Every so often something briefly breaks through, like how the Speaker of the House and his teenage son are each other's no-fap sponsors.

The right has largely succeeded in its message discipline. Their chosen terminology forces the left to "explain" the dog whistles, which then makes the left look delusional. No reason the left can't take the same approach and gear all communications toward low information voters.
