A lot of them dropped dead. And some of them weren’t as liberal as you might think (go drive into the Boston suburbs and realize you’re surrounded by crazy ass Trumpsters). It’s not a simple answer.

Boston: Another interesting example of political change. The current bastion of progressiveness didn't feel very liberal during the white flight phase of the 70s. And those 'crazy ass Trumpsters' in the subburbs are probably the sons and daughters of those who fled desegregation.

I’m not sure. But I can tell you as someone who spent most of the first decade of his life in the hinterlands of Beantown, the amount of right wing, ignorant white (mostly Catholic) racists was always high and is so much greater than what most people think when they talk about Blue Boston.
