You gotta start using elimination words to avoid situations like that. I made it to be seven, possibly more words using that pattern. Once you get the pattern, use a tier to eliminate as many possible letters as you can. I've had puzzles where I've needed TWO elimination words to get there.

Guesses 1&2 both eliminated an option for position 2, so I was left with 4 possibilities on guess 3. I might have tried for the birdie with 3 possibilities on guess 3, but with 4, I thought it better to secure the par.

One of my favorite techniques is the elimination word. I'm a cautious player and would rather use a tier to help narrow down the possibilities in a situation like that. I also find that using the "most likely" word seems to help, provided you have a "complete" list of choices.
