Wired you're missing a big factor. The new Model Y has only been released in the US in a single trim level. The higher volume base model , and the Performance version isn't out yet. So you won't be able to compare true sales numbers until later this year.

As a person who, years ago, dreamed of buying a Tesla, the only way I would consider doing so now is if Musk no longer had any financial stake in the company, went and started a new car company, and my Tesla purchase actively decreased his market share.
