I'm reserving my judgement. Solid performance re: China and US trade but defense remains to be seen. Is the US AUKUS review the reason he hasn't initiated one of our own?

He’s dealing with a deranged toddler. If we decide he can’t have the shiny AUKUS toy he’ll want it more than anything else. We need the US review to decide to throw it out of the pram first.

the US review is certainly convenient - but in the seemingly unlikely event that the US determines that they're good to go ahead, I can't see us then conducting a transparent review.

Nope. We will need to achieve long range force projection some other way (because the need for arm's length defence hasn't gone away magically). Bombers and fast amphibious deployments will never be as good as a single nuclear sub at deterrence #auspol
