Its not that the Dems defended those groups, but that they appeared to ONLY defend those groups. That left most voters wondering, "When are they going to do stuff for me?" I'm not saying that their assessment was fair but, as they say, it is what it is.
They haven't seen anything to help them since the ACA, and that barely put the brakes on healthcare costs at all. People that aren't straight white males have to deal with racism, sexism, and lgbt-phobia on top of this, but the party has largely been ignoring solutions that could help everyone.
The key there is that those solutions cost money, and upset the economic apple cart of some big donors. Party leadership positions often go to the biggest fundraiser. As soon as politicians start pushing for things that might cost donors money, you get pushback calling them racist or sexist.
They might be friendlier to spending money to help everyone, especially if it was accompanied by a coherent vision for the future and a fresh examination of the social contract. This is something that Harris ignored. She had positions on all the hot issues but little vision.

Sometimes I really like what Pritzker has to say, but I'm always thinking "can he really be that guy?" I do think he could get elected, but I remember Obama quoting Chomsky and sounding like a real change agent. Then he staffed his administration with a bunch of bankers.

Obama may have been a little moderate for some, but the racism that he faced and how he dealt with it I will forever remember and respect him for. The GOP’s refusal to acknowledge his presidency has led us to this moment in my opinion.
In 2008 I was a true believer. Perhaps I'd have been less disappointed if candidate Obama didn't sound so promising. To be fair it wasn't just him. Dems lost a lot of ground in state and local offices during his time. A lot of that had to do with changes at the DNC after Howard Dean left.

Branding our own party as “do-nothing Democrats” is free publicity for Republicans. Democrats have been working hard for Americans, and it would be nice if their efforts and accomplishments would get covered instead of listening to this BS.
Democrats and Republicans are running completely different races, criticizing one is not free publicity for the other. One party promises cruelty and it delivers. One promises hope and fails to deliver, election after election. We owe it to Democrats to demand better, to pressure them to be better.
