I was one of these women. I didn't leave without them because they were mine before we got married and I knew he would either hurt them, kill them with neglect or abandon them. The shelter that allowed us to bring them ended up saving me/my daughter lives. Having my pets there changed everything.
I left once without them and the fear of what he would do to them made me return. This is is especially evil because most pet programs within DV shelters are funded and supported by outside companies like the Purple Leash Project.
Republicans want to control women in whatever way they can. This is just yet another way. They want us to die if they can't control us.

I was an Executive Director of a D.V. program for 17 years. During that time, I witnessed several pets be killed to punish or terrify the victims. I had my own dog shot in my driveway by an abuser whose wife i was assisting in court. You are 100% right that pets affect how/when a victim leaves.
I was an advocate for 16 years I just retired . We had a shelter in Az that took owner and pets . If the animal was assistive dog then all shelters had to accommodate them. Also another organisation would foster the pet untill they could get back on there feet
That's what we did, too. It was easier for normal pets like dogs and cats, but we had horses, goats, aquariums, and even rats to find safe places for. I had a great team of advocates who could track down volunteers and foster homes for pets like pros.

When I was in an abusive relationship, I had a Labrador. There was a time when my then spouse cornered my dog in the bathroom & proceeded to kick the crap out of it. Being far along in my pregnancy, I waited until he left & tried to pick up my dog to get in the car and leave.

I have a beautiful Pit Bull/Chocolate lab mix....they told he came from a domestic violence situation at the shelter. He is gentle and well behaved....i often wonder if his previous owner's heart aches for him. I would.

I don’t think that information is openly available. But the organization that facilitates the adoption could probably let the original owner know about the pet’s wellbeing if requested.

My previous vet created Protected Pets. This program supplied veterinary care and temporary housing to pets of domestic violence victims. Victims could get shelter, and once they had safe, permanent housing, they were reunited with their pet. This is Maya who I took care of for five months.

I rescued a pup who was in a domestic violence situation, momma couldn’t take him with so we adopted her. She’s still a little traumatized but 2 years later she’s thriving now.

Our local shelter has a free program to house, feed and provide vet services to pets of these women. It’s a great program. A subsidy would open similar programs that are sadly needed.

The VP has literally said women should stay in abusive, violent relationships “for the good of the family unit.” They also wanna get rid of no-fault divorce, which means the abused would have to prove they were being abused in court to get the divorce. They definitely hate women.
I did a project on this in grad school, the importance of pets and companion animals to people who are unhoused, and especially victims of DV. There are ppl who will stay on the street, as well as staying with an abusive partner, bc their pet is their family. This makes me so mad.
