The "legal way" didn't exist until recently. This is the most nonsensical part of it. Through most of the 19th century, you might have trouble entering, but once here, your status was not questioned. The first major barrier was the racist Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

I had to take a "human trafficking" course for work purposes. (Google it! - Internet courses available) Un-beknowst to most of us, some of the national certificate programs list them as potential victims of exploitation. Most farm work is honorable, but not all migrants end up in nice places

But: Labor laws. It isn't fair to farm workers. Farm work involves more than 9 am to 5 pm schedules. Immigrants that are here undocumented may fall victim to human trafficking. Also it may let "employers" potentially take advantage of them.
