We're an imperial union in decline. This sort of thing is inevitable. I suggest that consciously moving forwards, actively defining 21st century English identity, will cause the fewest undesirable effects. Sitting here tutting at the far right puts us in the passenger seat.

Fractious national identities, a paralysed government. Predictable. An imperial union needs an empire's wealth to smooth over conflicts of identity.
