My take: It's not "gratitude" they're actually after. It's adoration. They want to feel important, wanted, and beloved. ... and if they gotta keep scolding people until they give in, they will.

It’s never been gratitude they wanted, because a foundational ingredient of real gratitude is authentic emotion.
Of course, that's out of reach for them. Because empathy is for "losers and women". ... you know, unless they need you to go easy on them. Then it's "have a heart, friend".
